Subcompact compact car Mitsubishi Mirage was produced from 1978 to 2002, and then continued its history from 2012 and is still in production. The model has a very confusing history with names: in different countries it was called differently. Many car owners are sure that marketers overdid it with this moment. Nevertheless, the car turned out to be very interesting and popular.
Brief history of the first 5 generations
From 1978 to 2012, the car had 5 different generations, which can be summarized as follows:
1. The first generation was produced from 1978 to 1983. The appearance of a subcompact model was very appropriate after the oil crisis. Initially, the car was available exclusively in Japan. The model had an independent suspension and a choice of two types of engines: 72 and 82 horsepower. Later, a sports version of the car was proposed with a turbocharged engine and a gearbox with an additional lever for downshifting (8 gears in total).
2. The second generation was produced from 1983 to 1987. The model was available in several body styles: 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks, sedan and station wagon. The range of engines has been changed.
3. The third generation was produced from 1987 to 1991. The car was in demand in all parts of the world except Africa. Then the main confusion with the names appeared, but at home the model was called the Mitsubishi Mirage. Changes received the appearance, interior and powertrains of the car.
4. The fourth generation has been produced since 1991. In different countries, the timing of the end of production of this generation is very different. The model received major changes in appearance. The main purpose of the change was to reduce aerodynamic drag. Touched innovations and power units.
5. The fifth generation was produced from 1995 to 2003. Many electronic assistants and systems have been introduced into the car. The exterior design has changed, and so has the interior. The range of engines has been changed and expanded.
Sixth generation Mitsubishi Mirage
In 2012, the production of the model was resumed. Manufacturers have done a tremendous job aimed at the economy and environmental friendliness of the vehicle. In terms of weight and aerodynamic drag, the model even became a record holder in its segment. Today, Mitsubishi Mirage is presented as a relatively inexpensive, reliable and economical car.
